Real Deal

Welcome!

My name is Bram and this is my advice column, the Real Deal. It is part of my momma's dream of Making it Real and inspiring others to live their best lives, find their professional career paths, and make a difference in the world one smile and success at a time.

My momma has many names for me: Bram-slam, Bram-er-ama, Battering Bram, Baby Honey, and even Dinner Roll. I'm here to share my wisdom about how to live the best bulldog life because I think everyone can be happier if they know how to live the bulldog way.

I have several months of experience being a bulldog and mentoring my momma (plus I keep her feet warm), so I'm an expert! Obviously!

Come back here monthly to hear my latest tips and tricks, and in no time at all, you will find yourself feeling like a new pup!

Environment

You asked: Bram, how does your environment affect how you show up every day?

Bram's Banter: Hello from the coziest spot in the world! Also known as "across Mumma," which just so happens to ensure she can focus on the important things like...well, BRAM!

I turned one last month, and I'm bringing all my world knowledge and bulldog experience to this month's Real Deal topic. With World Environment Day on June 5th, and the Summer Solstice is later this month, let's talk about how your environment matters more than you think.

I know every inch of my environment. I know which spot gets the best morning sun. I know which corner of the couch is perfectly shaped for a bulldog of my distinguished figure. I know which room is too loud for serious thinking and which one is quiet enough for deep focus (napping).

I don't try to sleep in the noisy room. I don't try to work in the cold corner. I find my spot and I show up there consistently.

Humans though? You try to "tough it out" in terrible environments and then wonder why you can't focus. Wrong desk. Wrong lighting. Wrong noise level. Wrong energy in the room. Wrong people around you. And you suffer these things with no bulldog moosh on your foot (how do you people survive?!).

Your environment isn't just your physical space. It's your digital space. Your emotional space. The people you surround yourself with. The meetings that drain you versus the ones that energize you. All of it is your environment.

Bram's Insight: Change your environment, or it will change you.

A bulldog in a bad environment becomes anxious, unfocused, and grumpy. Sound familiar? You deserve a sunny spot too. Find it. Protect it. Show up there every single day. You can't have my Mumma, but you can find your own and decorate your space with her!

Small changes matter. Better lighting. A favorite chewed-up toy. A shoe someone left in the entryway. Leaving a meeting that consistently drains you. Moving away from people who dim your light.

Find your sunny spot. You'll be amazed what you can accomplish from there.

Now if you'll excuse me, I heard the sprinklers start up, and I must attack them before my morning nap.

Balance

You Asked: Bram, how do you manage work-life balance?

Bram's Take: Hello, bulldogs and bulldog enthusiasts!  It's Mental Health Awareness Month and a perfect time to talk about this important topic. Now listen close because I'm going to share something hoomans get very, very wrong: work-life balance.

Here's my day: I work (guard the house, alert to squirrels, supervise all Zoom meetings, inspect the mail carrier). Then I rest. About 18 hours of rest, actually. See the ratio?

Hoomans have it completely backwards. You work 12 hours, skip lunch, answer emails at dinner, and then try to "balance" it with 30 minutes of yoga or a quick walk. That math doesn't add up.

Balance isn't about equal time. It's about knowing when to bark and when to nap. When there's a threat? I bark. Loud. Immediate. Then it's handled, and I go back to sleep. I don't keep barking about yesterday's squirrel or worry about tomorrow's mail carrier. Work happens. Then rest happens.

Hoomans keep working even when the work is done. You finish a project and immediately start the next one. You solve a problem and go looking for more problems. When do you rest? When do you actually stop? Here's what I know: you can't sustain barking all day. You'll lose your voice, exhaust yourself, and become useless to everyone who needs you. Your loved ones will get used to you not being present and you'll miss out on the best snuggles, the most important belly rubs, and the most fun wrestling matches.

Balance means working when it's time to work. Resting when it's time to rest. And actually knowing the difference and keeping those healthy boundaries.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've been awake for almost ten minutes and that's enough productivity for one morning.

April 2026

Feed your pack!

You asked: Bram, how important is having a support system? I like to do everything myself!

Bram's Bark: First, greetings, it's National Pet Day (April 11)! Give extra love to the bulldogs and other furry friends in your life. Second, it's Stress Awareness Month and a pawsitively great time to talk about this topic.

Let me tell you something important: no dog survives alone. Not even the toughest, most wrinkled bulldog you've ever seen (that's me, obviously).

I have my pack. Momma feeds me. The family gives me belly rubs when I need them. They let me outside when nature calls. They're there when the vacuum cleaner monster attacks. I show up for them, too! I supervise all meetings, I alert everyone when squirrels trespass, and I provide emotional support during stressful days.

That's how packs work.

Hoomans sometimes think their support system is a backup plan. Something for emergencies only. Wrong! Your support system isn't your safety net. It's your foundation. It's what you stand on every single day.

Find your pack. The ones who show up when you need them and celebrate when you succeed. Feed your pack; not just with food (though snacks are always appreciated), but with your time, your energy, your presence. Show up for your pack, even when it's inconvenient.

They'll do the same when you need them. That's the deal.

No bulldog is an island. No hooman should be either.

Now, excuse me, I hear the treat jar opening, and my pack needs me to supervise proper distribution (two for me, one for my fur-sister Luna).

March 2026

You can't give what you don't have.

You asked: Bram, how do you balance taking care of yourself and being there for others?

Bram-o-gram: I can smell spring in the air here in Minnesota. Mud smells the best!

March means National Nutrition Month and Spring Forward (ugh, Daylight Saving Time - whoever invented that clearly wasn't a bulldog - who wants to lose an hour of sleep!?). The oldest bulldog advice I know is: you can't give what you don't have.

Eat first. Sleep first. Walk first. Then you can be useful to others.

I've watched the humans in my house try to "power through" by skipping lunch or cutting sleep short. You know what happens? They forget where they put my ball. They get grumpy and don't want to play. They can't find their phone (it's in their hand, by the way). And they forget cuddle time!

A tired, hungry bulldog is useless to the pack. A tired, hungry human? Same thing.

You're not being selfish when you take care of yourself first - you're being smart. Fill your own bowl before you try to fill everyone else's. Well, except mine. Fill mine first.

February 2026

Play is Important!

You asked: Bram, how do you stay productive? With constantly changing priorities, deadlines, and heavy workloads, how do you suggest I prioritize fun?

Bram Slam: Happy Valentine's Day from your favorite bulldog, Bram!

Wow! I can relate to this! So many naps to take and so few hours in a day, am I right?!

Remember this:

Dogs don't schedule play for "someday." They play now. That ball isn't going to throw itself.

Humans who forget to play become the humans nobody wants to work with. Play isn't a reward for productivity - it's what makes you productive.

Momma says to remind everyone that Random Acts of Kindness Week is Feb 14-20! Don't forget to share the love and buy your favorite fur friend a treat (aka: Bram)!

Resolutions

You Asked: Bram, what is your New Year's Resolution?

Bram's Pawspective: Happy New Year from your favorite bulldog, Bram!

I have noticed that humans overcomplicate resolutions. They magic up plans with a lot of steps (I can only count to three) or they talk about big goals without setting achievable short term goals. Why make it so hard!?

Bulldogs know the secret though and I want to share it with you.

Pick one thing.

Do it every day.

Celebrate small wins.

That's it! Now you're thinking like a bulldog!

Consistency is the only resolution that matters. Every walk is a win. Every belly rub is a goal met. Every snack is a victory.

Did I say snack? This thinking has me hungry!
